Which high-resolution audio player has the best sound quality is your personal choice rather. Some audio players may playback qualitative audio files without altering (bit-perfect). In general, there is no matter, that player is use for it, but some nuances are there. Below how to make the choice is discussed.

An audio player may works in 2 base modes (depend on the software abilities):

  1. bit-perfect (transmitting data from an audio file to DAC without altering);
  2. processing mode (resampling, room correction and other).

In bit-perfect mode, the sound quality is defined by DAC and next audio devices.
This mode consumes minimal computing resources and is desirable for non-powerful computers.

Processing mode sound quality depends on the player and/or processing plug-in.
This mode may consume many computing resources (more quality = more resources), and, sometimes, can't work at lower-performance computers. Also, this mode consumes more electrical energy for calculations and cooling, than a bit-perfect one.
When fans work in intensive mode, they cause more noise.

Gapless playback

Some albums (operas, live concerts, etc.) should be played back as a continuous stream.

Some players can begin the next song without DAC re-initialization.
This ability is called as Gapless playback.
It may be applied for as bit-perfect as processed modes (see 'Playback modes').

Also played back audio files may be pre-converted in gapless mode too.
This mode has a sense when audio files are resampled or DSD files are processed.
Gapless conversion has a sense, when the audio player works in gapless mode.

ASIO

ASIO is a kind of audio drivers by audio interface vendors, that provide low latency and use of specific properties of the audio interface. ASIO SDK (programming tools) is provided by Steingberg.

As rule, ASIO driver is provided together with a sound device. Specific functionality management is supported via a special software control panel.

There is universal ASIO-driver ASIO4All. But, as rule, DAC-vendor driver is more recommended.

Latest MacOS versions use their builtin drivers (Core Audio) instead ASIO. So, you no need special drivers to works with a DAC. However, audio device vendors may provide Mac's ASIO drivers for some devices.

WASAPI

WASAPI is builtin Windows drivers to direct access to audio interface without operating system processings. May be used instead of ASIO.

WASAPI may use exclusive access to an audio interface to render sound stream directly to the DAC's audio buffer without mixing of audio streams from several applications. So, no operating system's audio processing is there.

Native DSD

Native DSD is sending DSD audio stream from audio file to DSD DAC without conversion to PCM.

ASIO drivers under Windows may support it. Under the latest MacOS version, DSD audio stream should be packed in DoP format. The packing is lossless. Also, DoP format may be used on Windows.

DSD to PCM

DSD audio stream may not be played on PCM DAC. Before sending the stream to the DAC, this stream should be converted to PCM.

It consumes processing resources. In the general case, better sound quality depends on amount of computing resources.

Aimp3 for pc

Some computers may have a lack of computing power to realtime DSD to PCM conversion. It may be solved via offline DSD to PCM conversion. Also, it saves free space at hard disk (HDD) of an audio player (allow more songs on the disk). It may be very useful for portable/mobile devices.

Also, the interaction of the distortions with a playback system (DAC, amplifier, speakers) is matter.

Does memory playback improve audio quality?

Memory playback doesn't improve 'transparency'. But the mode can get rid of pauses if file played from slow/overload network or album player in gapless mode.

Do gapless playback is helpful?

AIMP is a great classic music player and provides all the features that you expect. Like you, I was getting fed up with being cattle herded by companies like Apple and Spotify as to how my music player should look. All the other various restrictions in place that try to keep me in their customer box and not use or combine other services were also bothering me. This prompted me to start looking at alternatives and I came across AIMP. Although this media player is 21 years old there have been updates and in conjunction with the plugins, skins and hotkeys available for Windows and Android I wanted to know more.

Through my research I discovered that AIMP can support various file types, including MP3, Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), Dolby AC-3, Ogg Vorbis, Opus, Speex, Windows Media Audio, Apple Lossless, FLAC, WAV, and Audio CDs. It also plays audio formats like Monkey’s Audio (APE), Tom’s lossless Audio Kompressor (TAK) and True Audio; DTS audio, MP1, MP2, Musepack, OptimFROG, WavPack, MIDI, Impulse Tracker, MO3, MOD, MultiTracker Module, S3M, and Fasttracker 2 Extended Module. AIMP supports the DirectSound, ASIO and WASAPI audio interfaces, and it uses 32-bit audio processing for its 18-band equalizer and built-in sound effects.

It also has credence on the awards stage, TechRadar editor Cat Ellis ranked AIMP4 in 2nd place of the best free music players of 2016. I wanted to see it in action for myself, so I downloaded AIMP for free and it was on my PC within minutes. I liked the fact that during the set up there were so many options for the language and with the easy to use run wizard I was ready to start customizing in under 5 minutes. As expected the interface menu has all the standard options to import your music files but I was really impressed with the options available in the preferences set up. From here I was able to use the “transform options” for playback, it allows for “channel mixing”, the smart conversion of multi-channel files to stereo and mono. I especially liked the “dither” settings which suppress distortion which appears when decreasing sampling depth. It was also great to see it includes “Anti clipping” to prevent the scratch effect and any noise when the signal jumps. Already I feel more in control and that’s just the beginning.

Aimp3 For Mac Software

In the player set up, with the right plug in (which is free), I can search for song lyrics straight from the internet which is super-fast and is a great tool to use when I am experimenting with visualization. This is also where you can set up your “Hot Keys” for easy navigation to the equalizer, mixing options and volume normalization, all keys I use frequently. Having “Internet radio capture” which is able to capture and cache up to 60 seconds of internet radio streams into RAM makes a huge difference. It ensures seamless internet radio playback even when the internet is running slow due to other downloads running at the same time. The stream is also captured without transcoding for MP3/AAC/AAC+ which is a superb feature as it does away with having to use encoding cards. The initial “Music Library” set up covers the standard playback and user rating functions with file monitoring and it allows the combination of empty grouping levels wherever possible. Plugins and skins will allow you to make future adaptations to the player set up.

The playlist settings focus on appearance, file adding, sorting by template and of course the track list export. I can choose to see the switches and duration columns along with the expand buttons and second line info if these are features that work for me. The track list export can be done in HTML, Unicode, or ANSI so those limitations are removed giving me much greater freedom of choice. The menu is also there to manage the system connections for the internet, my file associations and tray. The tray provides easy navigation through the pinned “Hotkeys” and shows the playback status.

After setting up the basics the real fun begins with exploring all the Plug-ins and Skins to change the look of the interface and maximize what I can do with my music collection. Redesigning and customizing my AIMP media player is now as much a part of the fun of listening to the music as the music itself. I love the style of my media player because it’s my style!
